Saturday Night's Alright (For... ...the kids course?)

Racing a Canada Cup on a burly course isn't enough to meet the Recommended Daily Intake for competitive cycling. Thank goodness Red Bull stepped in to provide another opportunity to thrash about on a bike in front of a crowd.

Format was pretty snazzy. Take 25 cyclists with an affinity for altitude gain and put their bikes on the other side of the village. Let them get to the bikes any way they want. Running in stiff soled shoes along brick walkways and through fountains seemed to be a popular choice. Set them off on a ~seven minute lap on the most technical kids course east of Ontario. When they're done riding through the village, the downhill counterpart starts rolling from mid-mountain. After a few big jumps and drops, maybe launch off a fountain and then tag the XC rider. Repeat the riding stuff until the clock says two hours has elapsed. Maybe turn off the lights halfway through.

Captain's Log:
  • Riding a downhill bike at night with no lights trumps riding the kids course with a headlamp for man points.
  • The Ole Ole Song can work for cycling
  • Flash photography at night momentarily takes me to a special place - Blind River, Ontario?
  • 1m15s is not enough time to have the Red Bull girl hit on you and also get a Red Bull. Choices, choices....
A big thanks goes out to Ben for taking the time to knock out 13 mildly sketchy descents before his race and also for not running me down in the transition area.

Two cans-of-taurine-juice up for this event. It was a little long from a rider's perspective, but the length did allow for more spectators to check it out, so no biggie. I'd support this kind of race if it caught on and became a recurring event. Good, clean fun for the whole family... ...and drunk spectators.

Planning to watch some of the DH race tomorrow, and then maybe play some mini golf and hike up the mountain with inappropriate footwear. Or maybe I'll write this in the middle of the week and make it seem like I'm blogging at Tremblant on a Saturday night.
